HIGHER EDUCATION
The University of Texas at El Paso

Our Time is Now
With record enrollments, increasing research opportunities and growing degree programs, there is no doubt that “Our Time is Now” at UTEP.
UTEP is recognized as a model in demonstrating that a university fundamentally committed to its community and students can also achieve high levels of excellence in academic programs and research.
The university began as a mining and metallurgy college in 1914 and is located in the world’s largest binational metropolitan area with a population of more than two million people.
The only doctoral-research university in the
United States with a Mexican-American majority student population, UTEP serves as a vital force for the economic, academic and cultural advancement of the bicultural region.

UTEP ranks second in the nation in awarding bachelor’s degrees to Hispanics and is in the top 10 in bachelor’s degrees awarded to Hispanics in business, engineering and health sciences. Graduates of the university are heavily recruited by leading U.S. and international companies, as well as prestigious graduate and professional schools.
Nearly 76,000 alumni successfully demonstrate that providing opportunities to talented young people, particularly those who have traditionally been underrepresented in higher education, is a high-yield investment in the future development and competitiveness of this region, state and nation.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
UTEP’s six academic colleges—business administration, education, engineering, health sciences, liberal arts and science—offer 81 bachelor’s and 72 master’s degrees and a growing number of doctorates. UTEP offers 13 doctoral degrees in a variety of fields, and more will be added. In addition, the university offers doctoral programs in nursing and pharmacy through cooperative programs with U.T. Austin and the
U.T. Health Science Center at Houston. UTEP also offers, through the UT TeleCampus, three Web-based master’s degree programs in business, educational technology and kinesiology

RESEARCH CAPABILITIES
The outstanding research opportunities UTEP affords undergraduate and graduate students have also received national attention and recognition. Faculty and students work together to develop and participate in projects relevant and beneficial to this region.
   UTEP has been recognized by
University of Texas System Chancellor Mark Yudof as one of four Texas universities poised to significantly improve their research capabilities.
With annual research expenditures of approximately $32 million, UTEP ranks second in federal research expenditures among UT System institutions and fourth among the 35 public universities in
Texas. UTEP ranks in the top five alongside four health science centers in the ratio of federal-to-state research and development funding. For each dollar in state funding it receives, UTEP generates approximately $7 in federal research funding.
UTEP regularly receives grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Endowment for the Humanities and other agencies.
This fall, IBM presented UTEP with a Shared University Research (SUR) grant, providing the university with an IBM p690, an eight-processor high-performance computing platform. The platform has the capability to perform 50 billion calculations per second and will serve as a backbone for UTEP research.

STUDENT PROFILE
UTEP set a record enrollment in fall 2003 with 18,542 students —including a record
Graduate School enrollment of 3,457.
The university’s student population closely mirrors the demographics of the region, from which UTEP draws more than 90 percent of its students.
