New Mexico State University
Situated in Las Cruces, 40 miles away, New Mexico State University is one of the most heavily funded institutions of higher learning in the state of New Mexico. New Mexico State University, is the state's land-grant institution, with more than 23,800 students on five campuses. New Mexico State University has been named one of the 10 best universities for Hispanic students by Super Onda, a national magazine for young adults.
The magazine surveyed Hispanic-Serving Universities that also are members of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. The top 10 were selected on the basis of Hispanic enrollment, the percentage of Hispanic faculty members, student services, retention rates and reputation.
"New Mexico State University's expressed commitment is to provide quality education at the lowest cost possible in a diverse, student-centered environment," the magazine wrote. It noted that NMSU offers several minority advancement programs such as the Alliance for Minority Participation.
"We are pleased to be recognized nationally for serving the higher education needs of a diverse population," said NMSU Vice President for Administration Juan N. Franco, who oversees the university's minority recruitment and retention programs. "This commitment was underscored recently when the W.K. Kellogg Foundation selected NMSU as one of 18 colleges and universities to receive planning grants for a major new initiative to improve higher education opportunities for Hispanic youth." NMSU's undergraduate student enrollment is more than 40 percent Hispanic. Hispanic-Serving Institutions, as designated by the U.S. Department of Education, are those with Hispanic enrollments of at least 25 percent.
Super Onda is published by Hispanic Business Inc., which also publishes Hispanic Business Magazine. "The Best Colleges for Hispanic Students" is the cover story in the January/February issue.
