Our photo gallery focuses on one of the most vibrant chapters of our history: When El Paso was transformed from a dusty (and often dangerous) border settlement to a thriving modern metropolis. From 1881, when the railroads came, to the early years of the last century, El Paso was a free-wheeling, rollicking, hub of activity, as people from all over the globe came to seek their fortunes and lay down roots.
We are happy to share this work with you. We've made it easy to search by subject. Visit the gallery now and enjoy a remarkable portrait of a remarkable time.

Credits: These historic photographs are on display at the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce. Long-time El Pasoan and volunteer Frank McKnight researched the extensive collections of the El Paso Public Library and the former State National Bank (now Wells Fargo) during 1996 to assemble the gallery. The Woman's Department of the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce generously provided funding for the project, and Adair Margo Gallery, Art Center, Rebecca Goodman Krasne, and Isaac Lopez provided assistance in mounting the display.
