El Paso is the health care center for much of the Southwest and Mexico. The city’s health care facilities include 5 private hospitals, the public hospital, R. E. Thomason General Hospital, and the Army Medical Center, William Beaumont Army Medical Center.
R. E. Thomason General Hospital is the largest public hospital located directly on the U.S./Mexico border and provides 327 beds. In 1996 and 1997, Thomason Hospital was recognized as one of the nation’s top performing hospitals in a study by Mercer Health Care Consulting of New York and HCIA, Inc.
William Beaumont Army Medical Center, one of the seven largest U.S. Army general hospitals in the nation, provides an additional 479 beds for the area.
El Paso also has well-organized public health service programs managed by the state-directed City-County Health Department.
El Paso is home to a campus of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine, which serves as a full-time teaching facility for third and fourth year medical students. Continuing education programs for doctors are offered through the William Beaumont Army Medical Center and Providence Memorial Hospital.

El Paso is well known as an outstanding location for retirement living because of the mild climate, attractive cost of living, friendliness of the locals and the variety of recreational, cultural and social activities available. El Paso is one of the most popular military retirement communities in the country. Military retirees and family members living in the city averaged 14,432 in 1999. There are over ten retirement communities in the area that offer various living services for retirees, from independent living to skilled nursing.
