History of the Star on the Mountain

A Star That Honors and Remembers
The Star on the Mountain has played a key role in honoring major historical events. During the Iran hostage crisis (1980) and the Gulf War (1990), the star remained lit for extended periods as a sign of solidarity with U.S. troops.
On August 3, 2019, El Paso experienced a tragic mass shooting at a local Walmart, where 23 lives were lost in a senseless act of violence. In the days following, the Star on the Mountain flashed 23 times—one for each victim—as a solemn tribute. This act of remembrance became a powerful symbol of strength, mourning, and resilience for the community. Each year, on August 3rd, the star is illuminated in honor of those lost, ensuring they are never forgotten.
The 2023 Renovation – A New Era for the Star
In December 2023, the El Paso Chamber led a $250,000 renovation project to modernize the star, ensuring its legacy continues for generations. This three-month project introduced:
- Energy-efficient, shatterproof LED light modules that can display a full spectrum of colors.
- An advanced lighting system that allows for customized displays, including color-changing sequences for special occasions.
- Structural reinforcements to strengthen the star’s framework against environmental challenges.
As part of the renovation, the chamber sold commemorative bulbs from the original star, giving El Pasoans a chance to own a piece of history. Through the chamber's Starlighter program, residents and organizations can now request specific lighting displays for causes, memorials, and celebrations, ensuring that the Star on the Mountain continues to shine in unity with the community.
A Symbol of El Paso’s Strength
For more than 80 years, the Star on the Mountain has represented the heart of El Paso—a city known for its strong community spirit and unwavering resilience. With its modernized lighting system, the star will continue to honor traditions, support causes, and light up the El Paso sky every night.
